Our Mission
Letter from the Editor-in-Chief
Dear Reader,
Established in 2024, The Florida Finibus is an independent student-run publication at the University of Florida driven by its mission: to revive the American intellectual tradition among the Gator community. In a time where the institutional media fails to challenge the status quo, this publication stands as a platform and community of students who are dissatisfied with the information offered to us through the institutional media.
We believe that the American dialectic is in danger. In many classroom environments, students are taught to hate the very intellectual tradition that guarantees their freedom to critique it. This, in and of itself, demonstrates the erosion of true intellectual thought and a values-based approach to education that has traditionally placed American universities on the map. The neglect of engagement in challenging and stimulating discourse has heralded the crack in our societal foundation and is manifesting itself amongst plethora of our institutions.
At The Florida Finibus we value the unrelenting exploration of intellectually provocative and controversial ideas, so long as they are well-researched and incisively defended. We seek to restore the vibrant spirit of civic discourse in a world that has stifled free thought, lively debate, and dissent in the university echo chamber.
We invite you to read our pieces, confront your assumptions, ignite new debates, and ask questions. Let this publication remind you of the ideas students should be discussing and the valuable ideas that students can bring to the table. Let this publication remind you of what a university should be.
Sincerely,
